Environmental Print At Work!

I've been steeped with all sorts of "educational lingo" from my Early Education college degree. Environmental print is made of up words & other symbols children see such as billboards, street signs, cereal boxes, cartoon names, etc.

Lately, Reese was been enthralled with names of cars, identified by their logo on the front. Ford, Toyota, Mazda, Pontiac, Ram, Mustang, Mercedes, Chevy (which he calls a Hot Carl ). It's so fascinating to see him walk through a parking lot naming car after car. And he's accurate.

I'm waiting anxiously for the day when he asks to learn to read. So far, when I try sounding out words in books & such, he says "Just read the book Mama." I guess it does interrupt the flow just a tad when I'm stopping every fourth word to sound it out for him.

Continuing to learn to follow his lead instead of forcing mine upon him....

Is patience really a virtue or is that just a myth?

Leave it to a boy to start reading by car logos :)--it's actually a great idea and I may borrow it for my son.
When my daughters started to read we played a game and they had to read at least ten words (environmental print) til we got to our destination and then they would get a treat!
Thanks for stopping by my site!

MIKE was me, Lisa the very busy mom with 4. I have a husband that doesn't log out and I am too lazy to double check the login.
Sorry!

I remember the first time my son had "environmental print" homework. Me: "What?" But my kids loved that homework.

Sounds like he's got a pretty darn good memory.

I think he'll want to when he's ready for it?

Kids learn at their own pace regardless of what we parents try to force on them. And you know that he's really learning more than you see right now. Just wait, someday he'll just start reading words out of a book and you'll know that you were doing everything right all along. You are a great mommy. Keep up the good work :)
